According to James Donovan, managing partner at Goldman Sachs and adjunct professor at the University of Virginia, there are two important components that make a successful, efficient work place. These are excellence and strong relationships. He adds that confidence encourages trust, and so it is important to perform every job will and with pride.

He explained: “By building solid relationships, you will create a web of professionals within which you will be well know and well respected. And that’s good for any business across the board.”

The business world is extremely fast paced. Therefore, Donovan suggested that the students commit to a workout routine, take time off from work, and to work hard and with commitment while they were in the office. He concluded by saying “remember: study what you enjoy, demonstrate your excellence and your interest, be conversant in as many languages as possible, build solid relationships, create a strong professional network and always take time off.”

James Donovan, managing partner at Goldman Sachs and adjunct professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, uses routine running to keep in shape and manage stress. In an interview with Lindsey Holder, he explains that the exercise helps him stay calm, healthy and focused in all aspects of his life. In addition to his work life, he juggles raising four children, coaching their little league teams and more. Certainly, as a family man and successful businessman, it is interesting to see how he does it all.

Lindsey asked: When did you start running as a way to manage your stress and health? Was there a particular event that happened that encouraged you to start running or did someone introduce you to it?

Jim Donovan: I started using it to manage stress when I began my career at Goldman Sachs 19 years ago. I found that it was a tremendous relief- a great outlet- for me to run.

I then made certain that I ran for 30-45 minutes every day no matter what. No matter how little I slept and no matter where in the world I happened to be, all I needed was a pair of sneakers and running clothes to start my day. I’ve been a convert ever since.

Lindsey: Fueling your body is just as important as running itself. What are your go to power foods you have before and after your run?

Jim: I don’t eat before my runs, but right after my run I eat a breakfast of fruit (bananas and apples) and granola cereal with milk.

Goldman Sachs partner James Donovan also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia Schoolof Law. In his lectures, he often provides down-to-earth advice on how to deal with the business world and its various obstacles.

He explains that conversational skills are a key component for success in this and any field.

“Take classes in the law and business section,” he suggests. “You will learn about the world in which your clients live and you will learn their jargon. This way you won’t be intimidated by the business lingo because it really is just a thin veneer- so learn the language!”

He adds, “Use a pregnant pause while you’re talking to someone- it elicits conversation and feedback from the other side. It also forces you to slow down if you’re nervous.”

James Donovan, partner at Goldman Sachs and adjunct professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, often discusses different approaches to business.

He explains that his unique approach to client relationships:

“What has distinguished me in my career from my peers is my approach to covering clients. I discovered that the best way for me to cover clients was to cover them holistically. I wanted to be all things finance to all my clients. Whatever they needed, I would do. So it wasn’t just when a merger came up every five years, but every five minutes, that I was in contact with them. So when that merger deal did come up, it wasn’t a question of whether or not I would handle it- they came to me because I was advising them on seventeen other things.

“This allowed me to 1) box out the competition because I was already there 2) become the trusted advisor to the client. So the mistake that most lawyers make is when they’re given a mandate, staying within the four corners or boundaries of that mandate.”

James H. Donovan, a partner of Goldman Sachs and adjunct professor at the University of Virginia School of Law is one of the members.

According to his profile on the FNIH website, “Jim Donovan has worked in investment banking, investment management, and corporate strategy for nearly two decades. He also shares his expertise in the classrooms of the University of Virginia where he serves as an adjunct professor. “

When Donovan was elected to the board, FNIH chairman Charles A. Sanders, MD said:

“Jim’s experience in investment banking is a great fit with the FNIH board of directors, adding significant depth in the business arena. I welcome him to the board and look forward to working with him.”

Donovan said:

“I deeply respect the role the FNIH plays in supporting the NIH’s commitment to improving health, and am honored by this appointment. I’ve been an advocate of cancer research in particular for many years, and I’m excited to help support efforts in its treatment and prevention. I hope my background, experience and knowledge will serve the FNIH well as it continues to build strong partnerships to advance the NIH mission.”
